Describe a piece of good advice that you gave to someone - IELTS cue card - sample answer 1

Introduction

Giving and receiving advice is a common practice among people as it can help them in decision-making. Although I have taken and given many pieces of advice, today, I would like to discuss one such incident when I gave advice to someone very close to me.

Who did you advise?

I gave advice to my cousin, Kashish. Despite living in different places, we have always been close.

What was the advice?

She needed guidance because she had been struggling with personal and work-life issues. So, I suggested that she prioritise herself by practising self-care, establishing boundaries between her personal and professional lives, scheduling downtime and assigning chores to others.

Why did you give the advice?

Since I had also dealt with the same situation of being unable to balance work and personal life, I could easily relate to her situation and sympathise with Kashish. Drawing from my experiences, I offered her practical advice on how to balance work and personal life more effectively.

How was it helpful, and how did they feel about it?

Kashish took my advice seriously and found it helpful. She felt more in control of her life when she established boundaries at work and started practising self-care. Her mood and energy levels were remarkably improved, and she could tackle her tasks with focus and excitement.

Conclusion

Helping the people we care about and seeing how simple advice can positively impact their lives makes me feel amazing every time.

Introduction

It is always better to take advice from experienced people or a third person instead of making a wrong decision. Today, I would like to share the time I gave advice to my friend.

Who did you advise?

I gave advice to one of my closest friends, Yash.

What was the advice?

Yash was struggling with major financial issues. So, I advised him to invest his money in secure and renowned mutual funds and motivated him to take a few steps that could make him less worried about his future and financial security.

Why did you give the advice?

After getting married and having a child, he had many other responsibilities. He is the only breadwinner of his family. Making him think about how to work more and secure his family and child's future, I think I did the job well.

How was it helpful, and how did they feel about it?

After taking my advice, he discussed the same thing with his wife and initiated a plan to save and create a happy future for himself and his family. He was satisfied, which has even resulted in his promotion to a higher position.

Conclusion

Thus, giving good advice is just as crucial as giving advice itself. Good advice can come from consistent opinions expressed positively and can significantly transform individuals' lives.

Introduction

Advice can be seen in a positive or negative light, depending on how it is received and perceived. Seeking advice from experts or those involved in the same activity as you can be beneficial. Similarly, I once offered sound career advice.

Who did you advise?

I gave my pal Anushka some advice. We have been friends since college, and I have always respected her determination and courage. Whenever she needed advice, I supported, listened to, and gave her some advice.

What was the advice?

I asked her to make her resume eye-catching and write a good cover letter to highlight her core skills and abilities. I also asked her to keep applying to each opportunity she felt was good for her.

Why did you give the advice?

I understand how frustrating it can be to receive repeated rejections in a job search and how it can affect one's self-esteem and confidence. I have also faced similar setbacks and rejections, so I could relate to Anushka's situation and relate with her.

How was it helpful, and how did they feel about it?

She took my advice seriously and worked on it, making her more determined. She got a job at a good company with a decent designation.

Conclusion

All in all, good advice and suggestions given at the right time can transform the lives of people, including our loved ones, for the greater good.

IELTS Speaking Part 3- Follow-up questions

Question- Why do parents give advice to teenagers about making friends?

Answer- Parents give advice to teenagers about making friends because it is crucial for them to keep their children away from bad influences and choose friends wisely. Children in their teens get influenced easily, so parents need to watch children’s activities and assist through their advice every now and then.

Question- Is it good to give kids the freedom to make their own decisions?

Answer- Children should not have the complete freedom to make their own decisions, but they should be involved in decision-making. Since they have no prior experience and are new to this world, they require the assistance of their parents, guardians, and teachers when making any decisions.

Question- Do you think we must listen to friends’ advice?

Answer- Trustworthy friends whom we trust and understand can offer each other valuable insights and alternative viewpoints through their advice. Their perspectives, shaped by shared experiences and empathy, can help us make informed decisions and guide life's ups and downs more effectively.

Question- In what circumstances do people take advice less or more seriously?

Answer- It varies depending on each person. Individuals who are confident in their work and possess expertise in the field do not like to take advice from others. However, when someone needs guidance and is unfamiliar with basic concepts or is new to a place or field, they are more likely to accept advice from others.

Question- Have you ever received advice from professional people such as teachers or doctors?

Answer- Yes, I received a lot of advice from various experts, including physicians, lawyers, and educators. For instance, when I had dengue last month, I followed my doctor's advice on what to eat, how to stay healthy, and many other things, which helped me recover fast.
