When appearing for the IELTS speaking test, the examiner evaluates the student on three levels. The three sections of the speaking section consist of the introduction bit, where the examiner asks the student to introduce himself, then comes the cue card round, where you are given the topic to prepare, and then you will have to speak on the said topic. Lastly is the discussion round, where the examiner asks follow-up questions regarding the topic.
So, today in the blog, we are providing 2 sample answers and some follow-up questions that might be helpful when preparing for your exam. The topic we will be discussing today is ‘Describe a popular/famous person in your country.’
Without any further delay, let’s begin!
A popular or famous person is a human being who is liked by the majority of people due to their work or achievement. Today, I will talk about a famous personality in India who has done wonders for the country in terms of making its presence known on the international front regarding nuclear weapons.
I am talking about Mr. Atal Bihar Vajpayee, an Indian politician and poet who served as India's Prime Minister, three times, and member of the Indian Parliament for more than five decades.
Mr. Atal Bihari Bajpayee is mostly known for his great work for the nation, his efforts to make India an independent country with nuclear weapons, the Kargil War, and many others.
During his term as a Prime Minister, Mr. Vajpayee conducted five underground nuclear tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan, which led to India having a nuclear weapon and better position on the international front. Along with the nuclear tests and India’s emergence as a country having nuclear weapons, Mr. Vajpayee started the Lahore summit by extending a friendly hand towards Pakistan and inaugurated a bus from Delhi to Lahore in 1999 with the hopes of resolving the Kashmir issue.
Further, under his guidance, the Kargil War of 1999 happened when the Indian army recaptured the Indian points back from the Pakistani militants. Along with all these accomplishments, he also built roads in India connecting the four major cities; it is believed he built more roads than Sher Shah Suri.
I admire Mr. Vajpayee because he has been an exceptional leader and has done great work for the nation. He contributed to increasing the country’s GDP by 7% every year through nuclear tests, the Kargil War, building roads that brought connectivity, and much more. He is one of the most loved Indian politicians.
To conclude, Mr. Vajpayee was an exceptional leader who contributed immensely to India’s development, strengthening it internationally.
People become famous in various ways. Some, like politicians, become famous by making significant changes for the country, whereas others become famous for their exceptional contributions to elevating the country’s name in other areas like sports, entertainment, and many more. Today, I will discuss one such person who is not only famous but has also inspired the youth.
This person is Mary Kom. She is an Indian Olympic boxer, politician, and former Member of Rajya Sabha. She is the only person to have won the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times.
She is famous for contributing to the boxing community and has emerged as one of the best female boxers the nation has ever seen. She is a mother, an Olympian, and a former Member of the Rajya Sabha. Due to her work and achievements, she holds various designations.
Mary Kom has contributed to the sports fraternity in boxing. She comes from a poor family in rural Manipur and has emerged as one of the best women boxers in the world. She won the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and is the only male or female boxer to have won eight world championship medals.
She was the only boxer to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics and win a bronze medal. She was also the first female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games 2014 and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
I admire Mary Kom because she inspires all the sportspeople in the country. She is a true example of when there’s a will, there’s a way. As an inspiration to the youth, she mainly inspires all the girls to pursue their dreams wholeheartedly, and success will follow.
To sum up, Mary Kom has helped people from across the rural region and the North-Eastern people. She is truly an inspiration to all.

People don't need to become famous only because of certain industries, they become famous because of their work and contributions to the country. Likewise, the country has various unsung heroes, like army personnel. Today, I will mention one such hero whose contribution to the country is noteworthy.
I want to discuss Captain Vikram Batra. He was an Indian Army Officer who served the country from 1997 to 1999 and participated in the Kargil War.
Captain Batra was one of the acting leaders in capturing the points back from the Pakistani militants in the Kargil War. At a young age, he was devoted to serving his country and was awarded the highest Indian military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra.
Captain Vikram Batra is known for his courage and contribution to the Kargil War. His battalion, the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK Rif), was given the responsibility of capturing Tololing after various failed attempts. His battalion was able to capture that from the Pakistani Militants. Later, he and his battalion were responsible for capturing point 5140, an important peak in the Dras sector. He and his battalion captured the said point with great difficulty, after which he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
His next assignment was to capture Point 4875, located in the Mushkoh Valley, where, due to certain difficulties, he succumbed to death.
I admire Captain Vikram Batra because of his bravery, courage, dedication to the nation, and willingness to do something for it. It is unusual for a person to be this devoted to their country and contribute to it to this extent, even at such a young age.
To conclude, Captain Vikram Batra is an inspiration to all his peers because of his courage and selflessness and the country's youth.

Answer- People become famous because of their zeal to never give up and their rigorous hard work. These are the people who stand up against all the odds and don’t get affected by life's negatives. In my opinion, becoming famous equals hard work and luck, but the commonality between all these people is that they never give up.
